Why we love it
Aleatico Passito dell’Elba is the wine that represents the island. The Aleatico grapes, selected on the plant, are dried in small ventilated boxes, in the shade of a barn exposed to the island breezes; once destemmed, they are fermented at a controlled temperature, with manual punching down. The maceration lasts at least four weeks and the refinement takes place partly in barrique and partly in steel, sur lies.
The Aleatico Passito dell'Elba is a meditation wine or can be paired with spoon desserts, pastries, fruit tarts, dark chocolate, aged and blue cheeses, gourmet dishes based on acidic cheeses.
The artisan who made it
Chiesina di Lacona takes its name from the historic Church of the Madonna della Neve, which overlooks the vineyards, lending a sense of heritage and serenity to the estate. The winery, located on the beautiful island of Elba, was acquired by its current owner family in 1947. At that time, the estate spanned roughly 20 hectares, though only a small portion was dedicated to vineyards, planted with traditional local grape varieties like Procanico and Biancone di Portoferraio.
Over the decades, the family expanded the vineyard area significantly, gradually planting additional grape varieties. Today, the estate boasts 9 hectares of carefully tended vines, cultivating a mix of native and international varieties that thrive in the island's unique microclimate, characterized by Mediterranean breezes and sun-soaked days.. These include Procanico, Sangiovese, Ansonica, and Aleatico, as well as Vermentino, Viognier, and Syrah.
For many years, the grapes grown at Chiesina di Lacona were sold to other wineries. However, in 2018, Filippo, drawing upon his extensive experience at Fattoria Ramerino, decided to take the family’s winemaking journey to the next level. He saw the potential for creating unique wines that would honor both the family’s history and the terroir of Elba. With the support of his family and the expertise of oenologist Saettini, Filippo launched Chiesina di Lacona. The first official harvest took place in 2019, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the estate.
Today, Chiesina di Lacona produces a range of wines that reflect the essence of Elba: its vibrant landscape, maritime influence, and deep-rooted viticultural tradition. Each bottle tells the story of the family’s dedication and passion, celebrating the island’s unique terroir while embracing modern winemaking techniques. Chiesina di Lacona has become a proud ambassador of Elba’s winemaking heritage, blending tradition and innovation to craft wines of exceptional character and quality.
