Why we love it

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a red wine obtained from an indigenous grape variety native to northeastern Italy, particularly Friuli and, to a lesser extent, Veneto. Known for its firm tannins that mellow with age, this wine is a true expression of its terroir.

Aged in wood to soften its tannins, this Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso boasts an intense, clean nose with rich aromas of blackberry and blueberry, complemented by subtle herbaceous notes. On the palate, it is full bodied and round, featuring a vibrant acidity, a pleasantly bitter edge, and a long, lingering finish. This bold red wine pairs beautifully with pork, rich meats, game, or even a classic carbonara, making it a versatile choice for any occasion.

The artisan who made it

Roberto Scubla is an amazing person who is very passionate about his wines. He took a big risk and left a safe job in the bank for an uncertain future amongst the vines and he has truly succeeded in what he was trying to achieve. His winery and vineyards are located in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli, north east of Italy, near the Slovenian border, where he grows native grapes like the Friulano and Verduzzo but also grapes that have found an ideal environment in Friuli such as the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or the Sauvignon and all his wines have plenty of character and elegance.

This could well be my new favourite red wine! It’s a very deep red in colour with an enticing aroma and is an incredibly dry wine, which suits my tastes perfectly. I’m not especially good at picking out flavours, but I found it quite tart with a subtle taste of raspberry and I definitely detected a lovely hint of dark chocolate.

This may be a matter of taste, but I find that the wine benefits from being allowed to breathe for fifteen minutes or so before drinking.
