Why we love it

Appassimento style wines are notoriously challenging to make - often unbalanced, overly sweet, and reminiscent of liquid marmalade. For more insight into the process, check out Andrea’s post on the subject.

Roberto Scubla’s Appassimento, however, stands out as an exceptional red wine appassimento style. Full bodied and beautifully balanced, it boasts a complex nose of wild berries, roses, and tobacco, complemented by vibrant acidity and rich black cherry flavors on the palate. Smooth and aromatic, this is a proper example of appassimento done right.

Crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, this wine undergoes careful aging - 10 months in small French barriques and larger barrels, followed by an additional year in steel tanks. The result is a refined and elegant appassimento wine, perfect for lovers of the style. Enjoy it with stews, fried foods, semi aged cheeses, or even a piece of indulgent dark chocolate.

The artisan who made it

Roberto Scubla is an amazing person who is very passionate about his wines. He took a big risk and left a safe job in the bank for an uncertain future amongst the vines and he has truly succeeded in what he was trying to achieve. His winery and vineyards are located in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli, north east of Italy, near the Slovenian border, where he grows native grapes like the Friulano and Verduzzo but also grapes that have found an ideal environment in Friuli such as the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or the Sauvignon and all his wines have plenty of character and elegance.
