Why we love it

Appassimento style wines are notoriously challenging to make - often unbalanced, overly sweet, and reminiscent of liquid marmalade. For more insight into the process, check out Andrea’s post on the subject.

Roberto Scubla’s Appassimento, however, stands out as an exceptional red wine appassimento style. Full bodied and beautifully balanced, it boasts a complex nose of wild berries, roses, and tobacco, complemented by vibrant acidity and rich black cherry flavors on the palate. Smooth and aromatic, this is a proper example of appassimento done right.

Crafted from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, this wine undergoes careful aging - 10 months in small French barriques and larger barrels, followed by an additional year in steel tanks. The result is a refined and elegant appassimento wine, perfect for lovers of the style. Enjoy it with stews, fried foods, semi aged cheeses, or even a piece of indulgent dark chocolate.

The artisan who made it

Roberto Scubla is an extraordinary individual whose deep passion for winemaking has shaped his remarkable journey. With an unwavering dedication to his craft, he made a bold and life-changing decision to leave behind the security of a stable banking career in pursuit of his dream — to cultivate vineyards and produce exceptional wines. This leap of faith into the world of viticulture was filled with uncertainty, yet through hard work, perseverance, and an unrelenting commitment to quality, he has achieved outstanding success.

His winery and vineyards are situated in the breathtaking Colli Orientali region of Friuli, nestled in the northeastern part of Italy, close to the Slovenian border. This unique terroir provides the perfect conditions for cultivating both native and international grape varieties. Roberto takes great pride in growing indigenous grapes such as Friulano and Verduzzo, which have long been part of the region’s rich winemaking tradition. At the same time, he has expertly embraced other varietals that have found an ideal home in Friuli, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Each bottle of wine that Roberto produces reflects his dedication to excellence, showcasing a perfect balance of character, depth, and elegance. His wines are a testament to his expertise, the exceptional terroir of the region, and his passion for creating something truly special. Through his commitment and vision, Roberto Scubla has not only built a successful winery but also established himself as a respected and admired figure in the world of fine wines.
