It took Nicodemi five harvests for the wine to be finally bottled, five years of experimentation and the 2021 harvest is the first vintage to be released. The Montepulciano grapes are selected from an old vineyard of 50+ years, and a very low yield trained with the traditional Abruzzo pergola. The wine is then fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 months in cocciopesto amphorae.
The cocciopesto, as opposed to wood, do not add any aroma to the wine, but it softens and smoothes the tannins. This is a great Montepulciano where the fruit is the only protagonist. Fruity, elegant and with a long finish, the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cocciopesto is produced in very limited quantity and only when the vintage allows it.
Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Cocciopesto pairs beautifully aged cheeses. roasts and game or traditional Abruzzo dishes such as "cacio e ove" or "pasta alla chitarra".
The artisan who made it
Fattoria Nicodemi is located in Notaresco, in the heart of the Colline Teramane DOCG zone. The vineyards, at about 300 metres in altitude, protected by the Gran Sasso mountain and only 10 kilometres from the sea, enjoy an exceptional microclimate. The winery follows organic practices, without chemical herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers. Nicodemi is also the story of Alessandro and Elena, brother and sister, that took over in 2000 from their dad who followed the steps of their granddad. Nicodemi is the story of their family.
