Emilia Romagna

Emilia Romagna is one of Italy’s most treasured regions, celebrated not only for its rich gastronomy and winemaking traditions but also for its deep historical and cultural heritage. Beyond its culinary excellence, Emilia Romagna is home to Bologna, the site of Europe’s oldest university, and Ferrara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its stunning architecture and cultural significance. Modena, with its magnificent cathedral, the Torre della Ghirlandina, and Piazza Grande, further adds to the region’s historical allure.

The name Emilia Romagna originates from the Via Emilia, an ancient Roman road that was once crucial for transporting goods, including wine, between cities. Today, the region is filled with attractions, from the world famous Ferrari Museum in Modena, which opened in 1990 and showcases legendary cars, trophies, and driver memorabilia, to family friendly sites such as Italy in Miniature, an amusement park featuring over 200 scale models of the country’s most significant landmarks, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum, and even the independent republic of San Marino, just 10 km from Rimini. Nature lovers can explore the Po River and its lagoons or relax along the coast, known as “La Riviera Romagnola,” with its famed spas and vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita.”

Emilia Romagna is a true paradise for food and wine lovers. The region is the birthplace of some of Italy’s most celebrated delicacies, including egg filled tortellini, silky tagliatelle, and the world-renowned Balsamic Vinegar, which can only be produced in Modena and Reggio Emilia. The region also boasts Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, and Culatello, all of which have left their mark on global cuisine.

One of the most iconic dishes from Emilia Romagna is pasta alla Bolognese, a rich and hearty meat based sauce traditionally served with tagliatelle rather than spaghetti. Tortellini, delicate hand made pasta parcels filled with a mixture of meat and cheese, are often served in a comforting broth. The region is also home to some of Italy’s most revered cheeses, such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, as well as outstanding cured meats, including Mortadella and Prosciutto di Parma.

Emilia Romagna is also a key player in Italy’s wine scene. The region’s diverse geography contributes to the variety of terroirs, creating an array of distinct wines. The region can be broadly divided into three wine zones: the east, where Sangiovese thrives; the central area, dominated by Lambrusco; and the west, known for Barbera and Bonarda. Lambrusco, a sparkling red wine often served chilled, is one of the region’s most famous exports, offering a delightful balance of fruitiness and acidity that pairs beautifully with local cuisine.

The region’s capital, Bologna, is a food lover’s paradise, brimming with traditional restaurants and lively trattorias. If visiting Rimini, we recommend dining at “da Lele”, a charming, family run trattoria offering excellent pizza and seafood in a warm and friendly atmosphere at great value. And for those with a sweet tooth, Gelateria Pellicano in Rimini’s historic center or Gelateria Amareina along the Riviera are must visit spots for indulging in proper gelato.

With its rich culinary heritage, exceptional wines, and vibrant culture, Emilia Romagna is a destination that captivates every sense, making it a must visit for those seeking an authentic taste of Italy.
