Why we love it
It took Nicodemi five harvests for this Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to be finally bottled, five years of experimentation, and the 2021 harvest is the first vintage to be released. The Montepulciano grapes are selected from an old vineyard of 50+ years and a very low yield, trained with the traditional Abruzzo pergola. The wine is then fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 months in cocciopesto amphorae.
The cocciopesto material, unlike wood, do not add any aroma to the wine, instead it helps to soften and smoothen the tannins. This is a great red wine where the fruit is the only protagonist. Fruity, elegant and with a long finish, the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cocciopesto is produced in very limited quantity and only in the best vintages.
Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Cocciopesto pairs beautifully aged cheeses. roasts and game or traditional Abruzzo dishes such as "cacio e ove" or "pasta alla chitarra".
The artisan who made it
Fattoria Nicodemi is a winery rich in history and tradition, located in Notaresco, at the heart of the prestigious Colline Teramane DOCG appellation in Abruzzo. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, the vineyards benefit from a truly exceptional microclimate. Protected by the imposing Gran Sasso mountain on one side and situated just 10 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea on the other, the vines thrive in an environment that provides the perfect balance of sunshine, ventilation, and temperature variation, key factors in producing wines of outstanding quality and character.
The winery is committed to organic farming, embracing sustainable practices that respect both the land and the vines. They refrain from using chemical herbicides, pesticides, or artificial fertilizers, ensuring that their wines express the purity of their terroir without unnecessary intervention. This dedication to natural viticulture reflects their deep respect for the environment and their commitment to producing wines that are as authentic as they are exceptional.
Fattoria Nicodemi is more than just a winery - it is the story of a family’s passion and dedication to winemaking.
